Deerland Enzymes & Probiotics Receives Natural Product Number for DE111® Probiotic in Canada
Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes has been granted a Natural Product Number (NPN) for Bacillus subtilis DE111, a genome sequenced and clinically studied probiotic strain that supports gut health. This new product license issuance by the Natural Health Products Directorate of Health Canada (NPN 80077102) allows DE111 to be sold throughout Canada.
DE111 is a genome sequenced and clinically tested strain of Bacillus subtilis, a probiotic spore that supports digestive and immune health. The genome sequencing confirmed the strain contained no plasmids, antibiotic resistant or deleterious genes; the human clinical studies showed the strain’s ability to control microbial populations, aid in digestion and maintain general health. DE111 has the ability to form spores that protect the microbes from harsh conditions until they enter an environment ripe for germination, such as the GI tract. Because of this spore-forming ability, DE111 remains viable under a wide temperature and pH range, making it ideal for use in supplements as well as food and beverages.
All natural health products (NHPs) sold in Canada are subject to the Natural Health Products Regulations, which came into effect on January 1, 2004. These regulations state all NHPs must have a product license before they can be sold in Canada. Extensive safety studies were performed on the DE111 strain, including genome mapping, antibiotic resistance analysis and gene transfer analysis.
“We appreciate the rigor of the process for product approval in Canada, and we’re pleased that DE111 has met the justifiably stringent standards that are in place for all natural health products,” said Scott Ravech, CEO of Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes. Ravech added, “Based on the success of DE111 in the United States, we are excited to be able to offer this science-backed probiotic product to Canadian consumers, and we expect to see a significant growth in demand.”
